Why Fashion Design? 5 Reasons on Why Fashion is so important!

I think the number one question I have always been asked is "Why Fashion Design?". It is so frustrating that most people don't consider the question, "Why NOT fashion design?". People believe that Fashion is something that you just kind of fall into because of the people you know, but it's totally not. Fashion is everywhere around us.
Rachel Zoe once said, "Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak." This quote is meaningful to me because fashion effects everything. It represents your likes, dislikes, mood, personality, etc. It's a way to read people. Fashion is a way to express yourself. Think about it, of course there are popular trends, but have you ever seen the same two people have the exact same style? Of course clothing is mass produced, so obviously many people are able to purchase the same pair of jeans, but the real beauty in it is how each person wears them differently. It makes you stand out. We live in a world where people express their cultural beliefs, favorite TV shows, favorite bands, favorite colors, and absolutely everything else through your clothing.
I have always been passionate about fashion especially when it comes to dressing myself. When I was in the sixth grade, I knew that I loved drawing clothes but I definitely did not dress to impress. I use to get made fun of because of the clothing I wore, which is one of the reason why I find fashion so important. The one thing I did wrong in this situation is let it bother me. I had a fashion sense that I liked but I made other peoples judgments more important than my own. So hopefully this gives you a clear idea on why people should be more involved in the fashion industry. Here are 5 reasons why fashion is so important:
1. Fashion is EVERYWHERE.
No matter where you are fashion is always going to follow you. As Coco Chanel once said, "Fashion is in the sky, in the streets, Fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening." Like the image above, the artist uses his surroundings as the textiles in the clothing. Fashion will always be unavoidable so its best to embrace it and make it your own.
2. You can express yourself through your wardrobe.
Everyone has a different and unique style. Fashion is a way you can express yourself without having to say a single word. I, myself, am a shy and quiet person but I like to be loud and proud with my wardrobe. Everyone can throw on a t-shirt and jeans but it's all about how you present yourself. You can wear a simple outfit like this and still make yourself stand out by how you accessorize and the confidence you show in you personal taste. What's better than getting a compliment about your ensemble that you spent so long on to put together? Express your personality and creativity loud and proud and confident!
3. You are not consistently doing the same thing everyday.
When working in retail, merchandising, marketing, designing, etc., you will never be bored at work! The fashion industry is always fast paced and constantly moving that there is no time to stay in one place. For instance, working in retail, one day you might be selling and creating an outfit for a customer, the next day you could be dressing and styling mannequins. In this industry everyday is like an adventure. You discover new trends and new people and create different ideas so often that you can't possibly do the same thing everyday.
4. Get out of your comfort zone.
Fashion as a career can be filled with pressure just like every other job.It is extremely fast paced that you need to be under pressure in order to be successful in this industry. You need to be pushed to your limits and your maximum creativity capacity to come up with something new constantly. Fashions are constantly jumping in and out of the fashion cycle that people need to be on top of everything! The perfect opportunity to discover your true talents under pressure!
5. Fashion expresses your mood.
Lastly, fashion is a perfect representation of what your are currently feeling that day. On Monday, if I go to school in a brand new floral Summer romper, with a sunhat, wedges, and am loaded with accessories then that shows that I am feeling confident. But if I go into school on Tuesday with my hair in a bun, a Paramore band t-shirt, sweatpants, and converse then obviously I am exhausted and have been studying all not (or maybe even partying if it's college). Fashion is a great representation on how to show people how they can approach you that day!
All and all fashion is and always will be around us. No matter where you are in the world, fashion is everywhere. It is a very diverse and creative career path. This industry will keep you busy and creative. Working in the retail industry has allowed me to to express and conquer these five reasons.
